Sheer or Curtain: What's the Difference
Although they're often combined, sheers and curtains serve different purposes on the same window.
The sheer
It's a lightweight, translucent fabric that filters the light and adds privacy during the day without darkening the room. It's usually fitted on the track closest to the glass.
The curtain
It's a heavier-bodied fabric, serving both a decorative role and fuller control of light and privacy, especially at night.

It's not compulsory, but combining them offers more flexibility: filtered light during the day and greater privacy or darkness when needed.
With the interior light on and darkness outside, a sheer on its own offers less privacy than a curtain; that's why it's usually combined with another fabric in bedrooms.
